Closing in on a decade of monitoring women’s leadership

In 2019, following high-profile power and abuse scandals across the international development sector and recognising the lack of evidence documenting women’s underrepresentation in leadership, we launched the first FAIR SHARE Monitor. What started as an assessment of women’s leadership in 30 of the sector’s largest and most influential organisations has now become a gender equity benchmark tool for hundreds of organisations worldwide.

With the Monitor, we set out to track women’s representation in leadership and advocate for gender equity in the social impact sector, helping drive progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality. With 2030 just around the corner, where do we stand on women’s leadership in our sector? More importantly, what insights and opportunities might emerge from the next few years of monitoring gender equity and how can we work together to shape this future?

As FAIR SHARE embarks on a new organisational strategy, this is a pivotal moment to reflect on what the Monitor has achieved, what challenges remain and how its legacy can continue to drive change.
